Family Game NightFamily game nights are a fantastic way of getting the whole family together to spend some real quality time together, this is something not often achieved any more with the advent of more technical gadgets and the increase of people working unsociable hours. From my own perspective I remember many years ago sitting at my grandparents playing Clue, Monopoly and other classic board games, these fond memories with stick in my mind for years to come.

This guide aims to layout the best way to plan for a family game night, so now there’s no real excuse for you not to get the family around the table and spend some of that much needed quality time together. Now, planning for your first family game night isn’t overly hard to do but there are a few things you can do to get it right and to make the whole process a lot easier and a lot more enjoyable.

Setting The Date

The first and most important thing you need to do is set a date for the family game night, a night which everyone agrees to and which you know will not be interrupted by things happening in other people’s schedules. This is probably the hardest part of the task, mainly because people are so busy these days that they struggle to find times when they’re all free from other commitments. But, find a date which everyone agrees on and get it marked down on the calender.

Stick To Family Only

This may sound obvious but when you’re inviting people to this night the aim is to stick to family only, after all it’s a family game night and not a family and friends game night. It’s always tempting to invite the next door neighbour or a friend from work but please resist, this night is going to be all about the family and no one else.

Make The Night The Focus Of The Evening

It today’s technical society of gadgets and gizmo’s there isn’t one person at your family game night that won’t have a mobile phone or other type of mobile device, get them to turn it off! You don’t want distractions on this evening, you want the night to be about the family spending quality time together and not about texting and spending time on the internet. If there are things outstanding like chores or homework then make sure these get done before the family game night starts.

Always Use A Range Of Different Games

If you’re planning on making the family game night a regular thing then make sure you select different games for each one. No matter how much you love a game you can have too much of a good thing and playing the same game over and over again will make the night boring and lead to the night becoming more of a chore rather than being fun. Also remember to try and select games which can be played by everyone who’s coming to the game night, so keep in mind things like ages, gender and ability. The Taboo board game is a great example of a family board game which can b e enjoyed by the whole family.

Get Your Snacks Ready

Always have snacks on hand, you’re likely to get peckish during the evening, plus it’s always nice to have some snacks on hand when you’re playing a board game. One of the best types of snacks include popcorn, candy, chips and other finger type foods.

Overall your family game night is a night to be enjoyed so don’t make it a chore, make it fun for the whole family and something which you will look forward to again and again.
